Parched and Deceived: Rand Water’s Blunders Leave Thousands in Johannesburg Dry, CEO Sipho Mosai Under Fire
Johannesburg, Tuesday Thousands of residents across Johannesburg woke up to dry taps yet again as Rand Water, the utility entrusted with the city's most vital resource, failed to deliver both water and the truth.
Despite earlier assurances that supply was “stable,” entire suburbs have gone days without a single drop. In a shocking display of negligence, CEO Sipho Mosai downplayed the severity of the crisis in public statements, while internal communications reveal the utility was well aware of looming shortages.
Residents in areas including Soweto, Lenasia, South Hills, and parts of Roodepoort have reported zero water pressure, with hospitals, schools, and businesses scrambling to cope. Many are purchasing water from private suppliers, while others are forced to queue at tankers when they arrive.
The anger is palpable. “This isn’t just poor planning. It’s deception and outright incompetence,” said one community leader in Protea Glen. “They lied to our faces while our children couldn’t flush a toilet or drink water.”
Rand Water attributes the ongoing crisis to “high demand and maintenance issues,” yet critics say these excuses are worn out and fail to explain why basic contingency plans weren’t in place.
Water experts and analysts have condemned Rand Water’s lack of transparency and preparation. “This is a clear breakdown in operational leadership. The CEO must be held accountable,” said a former senior engineer within the sector.
Social media is flooded with images of empty taps, and overflowing frustration.
